Shopify Categories vs Collections: A Complete Guide
How Shopify's standard product categories differ from the collections you create, and how to use both to organize a catalog.

At a glance
We are a done-for-you service for Shopify stores that sell sporting goods, outdoor gear, fitness gear, and bicycles. You send supplier files and images, and our team enters and uploads every product. Here are the key facts in one place.
Updated
The problem, and the fix
Shoppers compare specs before they buy, so a missing weight or a size in the wrong format can lose the sale. Supplier files list specs in different units, orders, and formats, and most stores carry several brands.
We enter every spec in one format, such as 1.9 kg (4.2 lb), and ask you about anything a supplier left out instead of guessing.
We pull out the specs shoppers compare, such as capacity, packed size, waterproof rating, or frame material, and enter them in the same place on every product.
We set up sizes the way your store shows them, in one order, and build size guides from each supplier's charts.
We record the boxed weight and carton size of every variant and ask which figure goes in Shopify's weight field, based on how your shipping packages are set up.
We add new colorways as variants of the existing product, update prices and archive discontinued colors when you ask.
What we handle
We handle specifications, sizing, variants, shipping data, images, and collections for every product. Specs are entered as the manufacturer states them, in the units your store uses.

Here is how a supplier's bike spec sheet becomes one product with clear sizes, a size guide and the right shipping weights. The bike and its data are an example, not a real client.
The supplier sends one row per frame size, with three size formats, rider heights in two unit systems and the carton size and weight squeezed into one cell:
| Model | Colour | Size | Rider height | Bike weight | Carton |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gravel 2 Sand | SAND | XS/47 | 152-162cm | 10.2kg | 140x22x78cm 13.5kg |
| Gravel 2 Sand | SAND | S/50 | 5'3-5'7 | 10.3 kg | 140x22x78cm 13.6kg |
| GRAVEL2 SAND | Sand | M 53 | 168-178 | 10.5kg | 140x22x80 13.8kg |
We set it up as one product with a Size option. The rider heights go into the size guide in both units, and the boxed weight and carton size are recorded for every frame size:
| Option: Size | Frame | Rider height | Variant SKU | Bike weight | Boxed weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| XS | 47 cm | 152 to 162 cm (5'0" to 5'4") | GRV2-SND-XS | 10.2 kg (22.5 lb) | 13.5 kg (29.8 lb) |
| S | 50 cm | 160 to 170 cm (5'3" to 5'7") | GRV2-SND-S | 10.3 kg (22.7 lb) | 13.6 kg (30.0 lb) |
| M | 53 cm | 168 to 178 cm (5'6" to 5'10") | GRV2-SND-M | 10.5 kg (23.1 lb) | 13.8 kg (30.4 lb) |
| L | 56 cm | 176 to 186 cm (5'9" to 6'1") | GRV2-SND-L | 10.7 kg (23.6 lb) | 14.0 kg (30.9 lb) |
| XL | 58 cm | 184 to 194 cm (6'0" to 6'4") | GRV2-SND-XL | 10.9 kg (24.0 lb) | 14.2 kg (31.3 lb) |
Shopify uses product weight to calculate shipping rates. With weight-based rates it adds the package weight to the product weight, and a package assigned to a variant overrides your store's default package for single-item orders only (as of October 2026, see the Shopify Help Center).

How it works
You send supplier files and images, we reply with a free, custom quote, and every job runs in the same four steps.
We gather descriptions, images, and specifications from you and your suppliers. We can hold publishing until a launch date you set.
Spec sheets, catalogs, size guides, and images, from one brand or several. We can hold a new season until launch day.
We fix inaccuracies and inconsistencies, and standardize names, sizes, and formats to your store's conventions.
Units, size formats, and spec names follow one convention across every brand.
We check everything for accuracy, clarity, and searchability before it goes live.
Specs, sizes, and shipping weights are checked against the supplier's documents.
We upload and publish to your store, formatted and ready for customers, with progress updates along the way.
Large seasonal ranges can start with a small test batch so you can check the spec layout, then we upload the rest.

FAQ
Yes, we upload sports and outdoor products to Shopify for you, with specs from every brand in the same fields and units. These answers cover units, ratings, bulky items, and cost.
Yes. We enter specs from each brand's files into the same fields and units on every product, so a shopper can compare a tent from one brand with a tent from another.
Yes, if your store shows both. We convert supplier figures to the format you choose, such as 1.9 kg (4.2 lb), and keep ratings such as 20,000 mm waterproofing exactly as the manufacturer sets them.
We set up frame sizes as variants and put rider-height ranges in the size guide. For shipping, we record each variant's boxed weight and carton size and ask which figure goes in Shopify's weight field, because with weight-based rates Shopify adds your package weight on top.
No. We enter ratings and safety wording exactly as the manufacturer states them. We don't test gear or verify ratings, and we ask you when two supplier documents disagree.
Your supplier spreadsheets, spec sheets or catalog pages, size guides, product images, and any naming rules. If you sell several brands, tell us which spec fields your store shows.
Yes. We add new colorways as variants of the existing product, with their own SKUs, prices, and images, and archive old colors when you ask. This is part of our product data entry service.
Free, and custom to your catalog. Variants and spec fields drive the work: a single-size ball has one variant, while a bike in 5 frame sizes and 2 colors has 10, each with its own size-guide row and boxed weight.
